Early life[]

Born Dong Young-Bae, Taeyang was born on May 18, 1988 in Gyeonggi, South Korea. He has a elder brother, Dong Hyun-bae, born in 1983

His first appearance in the entertainment industry was in Jinusean's music video for "A-Yo". The collaboration with Jinusean led him to enter YG Entertainment, becoming one of the label's rappers along with G-Dragon. Although Taeyang was scheduled to debut alongside fellow labelmate G-Dragon as the duo GDYB, the plan was cancelled by the record label. Instead, they were joined by four other trainees (T.O.P, Daesung, Seungri and Hyunseung) to form the group BIGBANG. Choosing the stage name Taeyang (Korean: 태양, meaning sun), he abandoned the idea of rapping to focus on singing as the group's lead vocalist.
